UHD Student Symposium on Clear Communication Call For Proposals

UHD’s Institute for Plain English Research & Study is seeking student submissions for its virtual fall event, “Student Symposium on Clear Communication” (SSCC) on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The event will offer students an opportunity to share their work related to clear communication as it applies to their disciplines, which may include research and creative activities. Participating in the symposium also will allow students to improve their presentation skills for academic and career success.

What is clear communication?

Clear communication is communication that is understood on the first reading by the general public. Effective communicators:

  • Adapt communication to the needs of a specific audience to achieve different strategic goals;
  • Create readable, accurate, usable, and accessible products;
  • Use various concepts and theories of clear communication to maximize understanding; and
  • Clearly present results of research and creative projects that report findings on the efficacy of clear communication strategies.

Individual students or a team of students from any discipline can present their research and creative works during the symposium, which is open to both UHD students and those from other colleges and universities.

Student presentations must be 10-15 minutes in length and participants should expect to answer questions from the audience following the presentation. In addition, students interested in participating should create a 200-word abstract explaining a brief overview of the presentation and submit it by Monday, Oct. 3 (see Important Deadlines below). Some students’ work may be selected for the SSCC showcase online (those students will be notified and permission obtained in advance).

A prize of $200 will be awarded in the following categories: Best Research Project in Clear Communication, Best Presentation on Concepts in Clear Communication, and Best Product in Clear Communication.
