UHD Gator Athlete of the Month: Jorge Mendoza

By Bryce Calabaza

Meet our Gator Athlete of the Month, Jorge Mendoza. He started playing soccer at the age of 8, and he fell in love with the sport both as a spectator and as a player. Born and raised in Houston, Mendoza attended Benjamin O. David High School before becoming a Gator at the University of Houston-Downtown. Mendoza currently serves as President of the UHD Men’s Soccer Club.

At UHD, Mendoza is a member of the Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Blue Coats (the official UHD ambassadors for visiting dignitaries) and Student Government Association. In addition to being affiliated with these organizations, he is a peer mentor to freshmen for the Honors Program. In this role, he is assigned a freshman in the Honors Program to guide them through their first year. He frequently volunteers for both the Houston Food Bank and The Beacon, a non-profit organization helping the homeless. Mendoza has also been on the Dean’s list for the majority of the time that he has spent here at UHD.

Favorite Professor: Dr. Kristin Anderson, Professor of Psychology, because her class sparked my interest in the field of psychology.

Why I chose UHD: I chose UHD because it is affordable and allows me to remain close to family.

Why Soccer?  The UHD soccer team allows students to play soccer competitively while obtaining a degree. I also think it’s a great avenue to interact with other soccer players on campus and stay in shape. Being part of this team helped me stay focused on my education.

Favorite Soccer Player: My favorite soccer player is Sergio Ramos, a Spanish player who made his legacy in the Spanish Club Real Madrid.

After UHD: I plan to attend law school and become an attorney.
