UHD Alums and Grads Get Chance to Create a Legacy

The path to graduation is often one filled with gratitude. Now, that path can be physically paved with commemorative bricks thanks to an opportunity to leave a legacy in the University of Houston-Downtown’s Alumni Plaza.

Upcoming graduates may celebrate this significant milestone by donating $100, $250 or more to the UHD Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship. More than 150 alumni, faculty and staff have supported this scholarship, personalizing their bricks to honor their own graduation or the graduation of a loved one. The UHD Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship provides support for family members of Gator Alumni.

More than 300 students have donated in a salute to their commencement over the past four years. In that time, their gifts to UHD have surpassed $6,600 to improve and expand UHD’s colleges and programs.

Spring boarding off the excitement of May’s upcoming commencement ceremony, UHD’s Alumni Council Board Chair Laolu Davies has issued a challenge this semester’s graduates. If they collectively donate $2,021 or more, the class will be commemorated on a large paver in Alumni Plaza. The paver will be engraved with Class of Spring 2021, the number of new graduates participating and the total amount donated.

Students who would like to participate but would like to make a smaller contribution can earn a Gator Alumni sticker for donating $20.21 or more. Gator Alumni Stickers will be sent by mail after graduation. Allow three to four weeks for delivery.

To donate, text “UHDAlumniSchol” to 71777 or visit uhd.edu/give.

As another way to participate, many soon-to-be alumni suggest that their family members make the gift of a brick as a graduation present.

To learn more or to donate a brick or paver, information and forms are available on the UHD Alumni website.
