Student Organization of the Week: UHD’s Garden and Compost Club

UHD Garden and Compost Club

This week’s Student Organization of the Week is the University of Houston-Downtown’s Garden and Compost Club. The group was founded in 2016 and propagates two gardens on campus. The Sustainability Garden is located near the police station, and the Science and Technology Building (STB) Garden is located outside the namesake building above the solar panels.

Garden and Compost Club Officers: Diana Ambrosio, President; Indira Zaldivar, Vice President; Nichole Dukett, Treasurer.

Garden and Compost Club Advisors: Dr. Lisa Morano, Professor of Biology & Microbiology; Mr. Juan Martinez, Sustainability Coordinator.

Mission: The club aims to educate people on gardening and composting, especially in an urban setting. Club members want to show people that gardening and composting can be helpful and an excellent way to reduce carbon footprints.

Membership: The Garden and Compost Club has 31 members. The club emphasizes that faculty and staff are welcome to join in gardening activities. English Professor Dr. Paul Fortunato gardens every Monday with the organization and offers extra credit to students who regularly help the club.
