Student Organization of the Week: American Medical Student Association

UHD's American Medical Student Association

The University of Houston-Downtown Chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is Gator Update's Student Org of the Week. The pre-medical student organization provides members with valuable opportunities, such as certification and admission workshops and volunteer work.  

AMSA Officers:  Nidda Mian, President; Praise Oderinde, Vice President; Hafsa Khalil, Professional Development Chair; Naghmeh Foroghi, Volunteer Coordinator; Taylor Nguyen, Treasurer; Xavier Mitchell, Historian; Riyasa Shrestha, Webmaster and Graphic Designer; Vishwa Bhakta, Social Coordinator.  

Advisor: Dr. Gabriela Bowden, Associate Professor of Biology

Mission: AMSA thrives on creating a healthy environment for all pre-medical students and other health professions from all backgrounds by choosing community over competition. The organization advocates for quality, affordable health care for all, global health equity, enriching medicine through diversity, professional integrity, development and student well-being.  

Membership: The organization has 108 “fAMSAly” members, and the annual membership fee is $25. Applicants are encouraged to fill out the membership form on the AMSA website

Message From The Organization: “Always promote community over competition.”  

Interesting Fact About AMSA: During UHD’s One Main Event, AMSA took home two awards, The Most Creative/Special Program Award and The Community Service Award, for raising more than $1,000 for Healthcare for Homeless-Houston Clinic, which conducts outreach to local Houstonians experiencing homelessness.
