UHD, H-E-B Hosting Free Vaccinations on Thursday

It is a prime opportunity for UHD students, faculty, staff and their families to receive their COVID-19 vaccines.

Better yet, it’s free, on campus and participants are eligible to receive a $25 gift card.

This Thursday, Aug. 26, UHD and community partner H-E-B in August are partnering to offer the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Welcome Center. Registration is required to receive the vaccines. The second shot will be available on September 17.

In addition, those registering for this event will receive a T-Shirt and a vaccine card holder – and will have an opportunity to receive a $25 gift card.

“Shots are available, convenient, and, most importantly, a necessary step in moving beyond this health crisis,” says Cynthia Vargas, Director of UHD’s Department of Emergency Management and Fire Safety.

UHD strongly encourages everyone who has not already received the vaccine to take advantage of this upcoming event. If you are unable to attend the UHD/H-E-B vaccination event on campus, other opportunities are available throughout the city. UHD also is partnering with UTHealth to help ensure the University Community is vaccinated.

Local health experts including Dr. Peter Hotez, Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, and Dr. David Persse, Chief Medical Officer for the City of Houston and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, stressed the importance of the vaccines at a series of UHD health forums in April.

Another forum speaker, Dr. Stephen J. Spann, emphasized that as more people become vaccinated, the numbers of positive cases and hospitalizations will go down.

“We must do everything we can to reduce the risk,” said Spann, who is Founding Dean of the University of Houston College of Medicine and UH Vice President for Medical Affairs.
