The Latest Details on Resources & Events for the UHD Community

The University of Houston-Downtown is monitoring updates from community partners in accordance with the COVID-19 Response Matrix as well as making adjustments to daily operations as Gators return to campus. To that end, several changes will have an effect on faculty, staff and students.

Check this list to stay up to date regarding news that will impact the UHD Community as well as to find a consolidated directory of community resources that will help the UHD Community acclimate to these changes. This list will be updated weekly during this transition period.

Latest News

  • The Vice Chair of UHD's COVID-19 Taskforce offered an update on the University's Coronavirus website.

  • President Blanchard announced that the Soft Start to the Fall semester to further support campus has been extended  through October 9 with the expectation to resume regularly scheduled Fall 2021 classes on Monday, October 11. Additional details are included in his most recent President's Message.

  • UHD is offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to participate in the voluntary. Gator Vaccination Incentive Program (VIP), effective immediately. See more details in this UHD News article. All UHD Community members who have been vaccinated or become vaccinated can simply upload a photo of their vaccination cards to a designated Gator VIP registration link to participate. The program is open to students, faculty and staff.

Vaccination Updates

  • UHD's next vaccination event, in partnership with H-E-B, is Sept. 17 and will offer the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine for those students, faculty, staff and family members who received the first dose on Aug. 26. 
  • The COVID-19 Vaccine is available to UHD students, faculty and staff through the University’s partner, UTHealth. More details.
  • UHD Community members are encouraged to get vaccinated by their primary healthcare providers or sign up for an appointment at one of the Houston area's vaccine hubs.
  • All adults in Texas now qualify to receive any available coronavirus vaccines.
  • Texans age 16 and older are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccines.
  • Veterans of all ages can now receive a COVID-19 vaccine through the Houston Veterans Affairs office. Appointments are available by calling 713-794-8985.

Events & Information

  • Thanks to a partnership through Curative, the University of Houston-Downtown is now offering COVID-19 testing through a kiosk located outside the Student Life Center. The testing is free of charge and available to the university community and the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. UHD students, faculty, staff and alumni may sign up for appointments through the Curative portal and must then check-in online before their visit.   • The University provided insights on vaccines, the virus and related topics during the COVID-19 Health, Safety and Vaccine Information Forums hosted by UHD President Loren J. Blanchard. Guest speakers included:
    • Dr. Stephen J. Spann, Founding Dean of the University of Houston College of Medicine and UH Vice President for Medical Affairs, spoke with the UHD Community on April 29.
    • Dr. Peter Hotez spoke on April 19 about the importance of increased vaccination rates and how they will make an impact locally and nationwide. Hotez is the Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine and has appeared on major media networks sharing his expertise and analysis during the pandemic.     • On April 8, Dr. David Persse, Chief Medical Officer for the City of Houston and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, provided an update of the impact of COVID-19 vaccines and the important role they play in combatting the pandemic. University Updates

  • UHD President Loren J. Blanchard and Interim Provost Dr. Akif Uzman shared information with faculty and staff regarding updates dealing with COVID-19 and changes to the University's approach to Fall Semester

  • UHD Director of Emergency Management Cynthia Vargas offers an update on UHD's response to COVID-19 and the Delta Variant.

  • New forms are available for UHD employees and students to report COVID-19 exposure and positive diagnoses, as well as to request to return to campus.

  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued Executive Order 36 prohibiting governmental entities from requiring the wearing of face coverings. Based on this Executive Order, and with guidance from the UH System Office, the University of Houston-Downtown will no longer requires individuals to wear masks or other face coverings while on campus.
