Call for Presentations for 14th Annual Gender Conference

female and male figuresThe University of Houston-Downtown’s College of Humanities & Social Sciences will host its 14th annual Gender Conference via ZOOM on April 9. Houston area undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals for presentations during this one-day conference exploring the many dimensions of gender. The deadline to submit 250-word individual proposals or 450-word panel proposals is March 22.

Presentations can include individual papers, poster presentations, visual art presentations, creative writing or performance art. Three $200 prizes will be awarded for best paper or creative piece.

Gender involves social and cultural understandings of sexual difference and the practices and behaviors that support or challenge those understandings. Possible topics for presentation include the following:

  • Gender and the body
  • History of gender rights
  • Gender construction and the workplace
  • Gender and public policy
  • Historical considerations for gender
  • Psychology of gender
  • Influence of social media on gender acceptance
  • Sexual orientation and the law
  • Femininity/Masculinity and folk heroes
  • History of feminist struggle
  • Police brutality and gender (in and out of prison)
  • Similarities in the female and male brain
  • LGBTQ issues
  • The gender gap in STEM fields
  • Historical considerations of gender legislation
  • Gender and race
  • Negotiating power across genders
  • Gender, sex and marriage equality
