Accelerated Transfer Academy Offers Enhanced Transfer Experience

Apply For The Fall 2022 ATA Program Today!

Brittney Smith ATA Mentor

The University of Houston-Downtown’s Accelerated Transfer Academy (ATA) seeks to provide transfer students personalized support and a seamless transition to the campus and its resources.

ATA offers an enhanced transfer experience supported by the department’s career success coaches. The program also allows UHD transfer students to network with their peers.

Take Brittney Smith, for example. When she arrived at UHD to study education after transferring from Houston Community College in Fall 2019, she admits adjusting to a new campus was a challenge. Thanks to an email from ATA, she signed up for orientation and found it was a perfect match. “I went through ATA orientation at UHD, and the experience was absolutely amazing,” said Smith.

Now a senior and an ATA mentor, Smith uses her experience to help other transfer students build success at the University. “Being a mentor is so rewarding,” Smith said. “Helping others be successful during their academic journeys is something I'm very passionate about."

Smith encourages her mentees to ask questions and seek answers relentlessly. “When it comes to advising and learning a new campus, ask questions until you get the answers you need.” She added, “Success coaches are here for you to succeed.”

The ATA program continues to positively impact Smith’s academic and professional success.

“I’ve received a job offer through ATA and I am grateful to everyone who has been instrumental in getting me to this point,” she said. “I’m very excited about where I’m going and what the future holds.”

On average, students who participate in ATA earn higher GPAs and more credit hours in their first semester as Gators than other new transfer students. The program also offers students up to $150 in bookstore vouchers for each of their first two semesters and exclusive scholarships up to $1,000.

Eligibility

Transfer students must have 60 or more earned credit hours and must be enrolled at UHD full-time (12 or more credit hours).
